ORIGAMI with Makers Project presents the sensory flavor cup [rinko], exclusive to the ORIGAMI Online Store, from “ORIGAMI and Beppu Bamboo Crafts”.
This second installment of the project centers on the theme “ORIGAMI and Beppu Bamboo Crafts.”
About Beppu Bamboo Crafts: Oita Prefecture is one of Japan's leading bamboo-producing regions, particularly renowned for the high quality of its “madake” bamboo. The Beppu area, blessed with a warm, humid climate and abundant rainfall, nurtures thriving bamboo forests, providing a rich supply of high-quality bamboo resources. Furthermore, Japan has a long tradition of hot spring therapy called “tōji,” and Beppu Onsen has welcomed numerous visitors seeking this therapy from across the country. During the Edo period, the culture of yu-ji, where commoners stayed long-term to heal their bodies, became widely established. The convergence of Beppu's hot springs and bamboo-rich environment, along with its cultural and industrial background, led to bamboo crafts being used for tools supporting the yu-ji lifestyle, such as bath buckets and bath baskets.
Koyo Ceramics developed a limited-edition drip holder and sensory flavor cup, inspired by the imagined aging process of bamboo crafts, to complement the bamboo drip holder. After repeated prototyping, the period from initial concept to development spanned approximately two years.
New bamboo crafts appear green or pale beige, but over time, exposure to light and air transforms them into amber or deep brown hues. With use, they develop a richer luster and deeper texture, becoming uniquely familiar tools.
This limited-edition color captures that beautiful aging process in ceramic form.
Using kiln-change glazes, each piece has a slightly different expression, with gradient hues
reflecting how bamboo crafts gradually transform into amber over time.
Furthermore, we paid meticulous attention to the color tones to ensure a unified look when the dripper, dripper holder, and sensory flavor cup are combined as a set.
Inspired by traditional Japanese craftsmanship, these modern hues naturally harmonize with contemporary living.
Pairing it with a glass server in summer creates an even cooler impression, another recommended feature.
